The year is 2025, and Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) is living a quiet, post-golfing life with his wife Virginia (Julie Bowen) and their five children. But the sequel doesn’t waste time before turning Happy’s world upside down. In a shocking early twist, Virginia dies in an on-course accident, a darkly comedic echo of the original movie’s tragicomic opening. The loss sends Happy into a spiral marked by grief, financial hardship, and brushes with the law. His beloved grandmother’s house slips through his fingers, and he finds himself in rehab, run, in a brilliant bit of continuity, by Hal L. (Ben Stiller), the sadistic orderly from the first film.
Life, of course, takes another surprising turn when Happy learns his daughter, Vienna (Sunny Sandler), has been accepted to the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet School. Now broke and desperate to raise $300,000 for tuition, Happy has only one way left to get back on his feet: pick up his clubs and return to golf.
But the golfing world has changed. Enter Frank Manatee (Benny Safdie), the manic CEO of Maxi Energy Drink, who’s starting a maximalist golf league, Maxi Golf, with wild, youth-focused rules and big money. The classic sport’s establishment sets up a climactic showdown: the best of the old-school tour versus the brash Maxi Golf team. Naturally, one of the returning “villains” is Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), newly released from a mental institution and as unhinged as ever.
Cast Returning legends: Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore, Julie Bowen as Virginia, Happy’s steadfast partner and, following her character’s untimely death, a ghostly presence in flashbacks and “happy place” visions, Christopher McDonald shines once again as Shooter McGavin. This time, Shooter’s role oscillates between deranged nemesis and reluctant ally, Ben Stiller returns. Dennis Dugan and Kevin Nealon make welcome appearances, revisiting their original roles and adding continuity and comedy.

Taking over from the original composer Mark Mothersbaugh, Rupert Gregson-Williams steps onto the green as the architect of Happy Gilmore 2’s score. Known for his sweeping, emotive work on blockbusters like Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Hacksaw Ridge, Gregson-Williams injects the film with heart, warmth, and a tongue-in-cheek grandeur that elevates the comedic mayhem. The soundtrack is a rollicking mixtape, interlacing original themes with classic rock, 80s pop, R&B, and hip-hop, echoing the first film’s blend of nostalgia and musical surprises.
