Expats Season 1 Soundtrack

Directed and created by acclaimed filmmaker Lulu Wang (The Farewell) and adapted from Janice Y.K. Lee’s bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates, Expats delivers an intricate, emotionally devastating portrait of grief, privilege, and resilience set against the dense architectural canyons of 2014 Hong Kong. Starring Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman alongside Sarayu Blue and Ji-young Yoo, the six-part Amazon Prime Video limited series examines how a sudden tragedy at a bustling night market irrevocably splinters three American women's lives.

The musical soundscape is anchored by an evocative original score from composer Alex Weston (The Farewell, Wandering Mind). Weston employs delicate, weeping strings, intimate acoustic piano motifs, and subtle electronic ambient textures to capture the humid isolation of high-rise expat life and the bustling energy of Kowloon. Released across 34 tracks by Lakeshore Records and Amazon Content Services, Weston’s score balances haunting minimalism with poignant emotional crescendos.

Complementing the orchestral score is an eclectic, transnational curation of needle drops spanning indie soul, retro synth-pop, Cantonese pop, and classic disco. Highlights include Tom Misch & Zak Abel’s infectious groove "Beautiful Escape", Modjo’s nostalgic house staple "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)", Blondie’s seminal "Heart Of Glass", Cantopop legend George Lam’s rendition of "Uptown Girl", and Faye Wong’s dreamy "Summer Of Love". A standout cinematic moment occurs in the feature-length fifth episode ("Central"), which shifts perspective to the city’s Filipino domestic workers and features a cathartic Sunday gathering sing-along of Katy Perry’s "Roar" performed by the Expats Choir.
