Phony Season 1 Soundtrack — Overview & Musical Style

Blending sharp suburban satire with dark psychological mystery, the Phony soundtrack brings Hulu’s eerie comedy to life through a carefully curated selection of alternative rock, indie folk, and vintage punk. As high school student Sonny Cooke (Sam Nivola) becomes convinced that his mother and school principal Ellen (Connie Britton) is an imposter following a car accident, the songs played throughout Phony reflect his escalating paranoia. The series’ sonic identity bridges comforting mother-son nostalgia with unsettling dissonance, making the music from Phony Season 1 an essential narrative device that mirrors the unraveling trust at the heart of the story.

Rather than sticking to predictable indie-pop, the soundtrack pivots wildly between nostalgic comfort and jarring post-punk to match Sonny's erratic state of mind. One minute, a moving office dance with his mother is set to the warm folk harmonies of Indigo Girls' 'Galileo', and the next, a chaotic pursuit on an electric scooter plays out to the frenetic rhythm of Wire's 'I Am the Fly'. The musical selections throughout the season constantly keep the audience off balance, contrasting the gritty punch of The Clash's 'Lose This Skin' with the delicate, vintage melancholy of Molly Drake's 'I Remember' and the bittersweet warmth of Nick Delffs' 'Love in the Meantime'.
