Adapted from Lars Kepler's bestselling Scandinavian crime novels, Nocturne follows former soldier turned homicide detective Jonah Lynn (Liev Schreiber) as an imprisoned serial killer targets his family and small Pennsylvania town. Forced into an uneasy alliance with undercover FBI agent Saga Bauer (Zazie Beetz), the investigative thriller pairs dark psychological tension with an original score by Toydrum.

The Musical Direction of Nocturne

Apple TV's crime thriller series Nocturne translates the gripping suspense of Scandinavian noir into a chilling American setting. Starring Liev Schreiber as detective Jonah Lynn, Zazie Beetz as undercover agent Saga Bauer, and Stephen Graham as the cunning imprisoned serial killer Jurek Walter, the production relies heavily on an austere sound design to mirror the high psychological stakes of the investigation across rural Pennsylvania.

Music supervisor Mandy Mamlet curates a calculated selection of featured songs and licensed tracks that underline the emotional strain carried by the central characters. Rather than overwhelming scenes with overt commercial tracks, the music choices remain deliberate and sparse, allowing tense interrogations and cold, atmospheric exteriors to breathe while anchoring critical plot turns with stark, lingering melodies.

The original score is composed by Toydrum, the acclaimed British musical duo formed by Pablo Clements and James Griffith. Known for their evocative hybrid textures combining dark analog synthesizers, organic acoustic strings, and understated percussion, Toydrum delivers a propulsive instrumental backdrop that heightens the psychological dread between Lynn and his elusive adversary.
