The Sound of Tulsa: The Musical Identity of The Lowdown

From its opening minutes, The Lowdown distinguished itself as one of the most musically distinctive crime shows on television. Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the series reflects creator Sterlin Harjo's dedication to regional authenticity. Rather than relying on generic modern score textures, Harjo built the show's musical foundation on the celebrated legacy of the "Tulsa Sound" — an organic synthesis of swamp rock, country blues, and Americana pioneered in the 1960s and 1970s.

Season 1 showcased classic tracks from regional titans like J.J. Cale (including "Call Me the Breeze", "Don't Go to Strangers", and "Magnolia"), Lee Hazlewood ("Tulsa Sunday", "Hey Cowboy"), Leon Russell ("Stranger In a Strange Land"), and guitarist Jesse Ed Davis ("Keep Me Comin'"). Blended with raw blues from Taj Mahal, classic soul from Shirley Caesar, and punk cuts from Mudhoney and The Dils, the soundtrack gave Lee Raybon's ramshackle investigative world a lived-in, vinyl-warm atmosphere.

Anchoring the original music is acclaimed Oklahoma roots-rocker JD McPherson , whose score channels gritty guitar twang, vintage baritone rumble, and subtle suspense motifs that mirror Lee's relentless quest through Oklahoma's dusty backroads.

Why Cymande Remains the Series' Signature Groove

One of the most rewarding musical traditions established by The Lowdown is its connection with legendary British funk band Cymande . The group's 1972 underground anthem "Getting It Back" propelled the original Season 1 teaser, capturing the swagger and underdog energy of Lee's investigative journalism.

For Season 2, Harjo and music supervisor Tiffany Anders doubled down on that winning formula, setting the new official trailer to Cymande's 1974 masterpiece "Brothers On The Slide" . Anders expertly curates the series' eclectic blend of swamp rock, regional blues, and deep-groove funk that defines Lee Raybon's pulp-noir exploits as his investigations take even more dangerous turns across Green Country.
