Kristoffer Borgli, the director who gave us the brilliantly weird Dream Scenario, is back with The Drama, and it's every bit as unsettling as you'd expect. Starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as a high-profile couple whose relationship hits a wall just days before their wedding, the film manages to balance dark comedy with a deep sense of psychological dread. It all starts with a seemingly innocent social game where a 'nuclear' confession turns their perfect lives upside down. The tension in the air is palpable, and a big part of that atmospheric unease comes from the film’s unique soundtrack choices.
One of the standouts in the music department is the use of Donna Lewis’s classic 'I Love You Always Forever' in the teaser trailer. It’s the kind of song that sounds upbeat on the surface but, in the context of this movie, takes on a much more ironic and almost haunting quality. Along with the original score by Daniel Pemberton—who is known for his versatile work from Spider-Verse to Steve Jobs—the film uses a mix of indie folk and electronic tracks to mirror Charlie’s growing paranoia as he begins to obsess over Emma’s past.
The soundtrack is surprisingly eclectic, featuring everything from Alicia Keys' 'Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart' to more obscure gems like 'Leisure Suit Preben' by Todd Terje and the soulful vibes of 'The Wind' by Nolan Strong & The Diablos. Music supervisor Jemma Burns has put together a collection that feels both modern and retro, highlighting the film’s themes of identity and trust. Whether it’s the folk-rock sounds of Sibylle Baier or the experimental electronic work of Smerz, each track feels carefully selected to heighten the awkwardness and uncertainty of the situation.
