White Bird, directed by Marc Forster, is a coming-of-age film that explores themes of kindness and resilience against the backdrop of World War II. Released on October 4, 2024, this movie serves as both a prequel and sequel to the 2017 film “Wonder,” based on R.J. Palacio’s graphic novel “White Bird: A Wonder Story.” Music from the movie’s soundtrack here.
Set in Nazi-occupied France, the story follows Sara Blum, portrayed by Ariella Glaser, a Jewish girl whose life is turned upside down as the German occupation intensifies. As her family faces increasing danger, Sara finds refuge in the barn of Julien Beaumier (Orlando Schwerdt), a classmate with polio. Their bond deepens as Julien’s parents, Vivienne (Gillian Anderson) and Jean Paul (Jo Stone-Fewings), provide shelter and support. The film poignantly captures their struggles and the moral dilemmas faced by those living under oppressive regimes, highlighting the importance of compassion in dire circumstances.
Ariella Glaser as Sara Blum, Orlando Schwerdt as Julien Beaumier, Bryce Gheisar reprising his role as Julian Albans, Gillian Anderson as Vivienne Beaumier, Helen Mirren as Grandmère, who narrates Sara’s story.
Producers Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman from Mandeville Films collaborated with Lionsgate for this project. The screenplay was crafted by Mark Bomback, while the evocative score was composed by Thomas Newman, known for his ability to enhance emotional storytelling through music.
