Nate Edwards makes his directorial debut with “She Taught Love,” a romantic drama that explores the complexities of love and life. Set to release on September 27, 2024, both in theaters and on Hulu, the movie centers around Frank Cooper, portrayed by Darrell Britt-Gibson, who is an actor struggling to find his footing after leaving a successful television series. Songs form the film’s soundtrack here.
His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Mali Waters, played by Arsema Thomas, a vibrant sports agent living in the moment. Their connection forces them to confront their fears and embrace the fleeting nature of life and love.
Frank has been coasting through life, distracted by superficial relationships and substance use while auditioning for roles that often reinforce negative stereotypes. The arrival of Mali challenges him to reevaluate his choices and priorities. As Mali faces her own mortality, the urgency of their relationship becomes apparent. The movie beautifully illustrates how love can inspire individuals to live fully and authentically, even in the face of uncertainty.
The cast features Taissa Farmiga as Samantha, D’Arcy Carden as Laura, and Edwin Lee Gibson as Kevin. The chemistry between Britt-Gibson and Thomas is particularly highlighted as they navigate their characters’ vulnerabilities and desires.
Produced by Milan Chakraborty, Sanjay M. Sharma, Hadley Klein, and Peter Van Auker under Marginal Mediaworks and Andscape, “She Taught Love” aims to present a narrative that resonates with a wide audience while also promoting Black talent in Hollywood. The film’s marketing emphasizes its universal themes of joy and the transformative power of love.
Darrell Britt-Gibson not only stars in the Hulu‘s film but also penned the screenplay, marking his debut as a writer. His vision for this project is rooted in personal experiences and cultural narratives that seek to uplift underrepresented voices in cinema. Edwards expressed gratitude for the opportunity to bring this story to life, noting how it serves as a love letter to both life and love.
