Hurry Up Tomorrow is a 2025 American psychological thriller that marks a bold, introspective turn for Abel Tesfaye, the artist formerly known as The Weeknd. Directed by Trey Edward Shults and co-written by Tesfaye, Shults, and Reza Fahim, the film serves as both a cinematic companion and narrative extension to Tesfaye’s final album under The Weeknd moniker. Released theatrically on May 16, 2025, by Lionsgate, the movie stars Tesfaye as a fictionalized version of himself, alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. Bellow all the songs played in the movie

The story centers on Abel, a globally renowned musician battling depression and insomnia after a painful breakup. His downward spiral is set in motion when he loses his voice onstage, a plotline inspired by Tesfaye’s real-life vocal injury in 2022. After the failed concert, Abel finds himself drawn into a surreal, existential journey by Anima (Jenna Ortega), an obsessive fan with her own troubled past. As their paths intertwine, the film explores themes of identity, artistic burnout, and the destructive allure of fame.

Anima’s actions become increasingly erratic, culminating in a violent confrontation that forces Abel to confront his own emotional barriers. The narrative blurs reality and hallucination, climaxing in a cathartic sequence where Abel, tied to a hotel bed, must literally and metaphorically sing for his survival. The film’s structure is intentionally disjointed and dreamlike, reflecting Abel’s fractured psyche and the pressures of celebrity life.

Sound designer Johnnie Burn and Tesfaye meticulously crafted the film’s sonic landscape, with some performance scenes reworked dozens of times to achieve the perfect blend of immersion and clarity.

Hurry Up Tomorrow is currently available exclusively in theaters across the United States, distributed by Lionsgate. While there is no confirmed streaming release date as of June 2025, fans can expect the film to arrive on major digital platforms later this year following its theatrical run. The companion album is already streaming on all major music services, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.
