Steven Soderbergh’s Presence (2024) is not your typical haunted house film. With psychological suspense and supernatural intrigue, the movie explores family trauma, grief and the unseen forces that shape our lives. Check the music played in the movie bellow.

Presence follows the Payne family as they move into a seemingly ordinary suburban home, hoping for a fresh start after a series of personal tragedies. Rebekah (Lucy Liu) and Chris (Chris Sullivan) are parents to Tyler (Eddy Maday), a competitive swimmer, and Chloe (Callina Liang), who is emotionally fragile after the traumatic loss of her friend Nadia. Their realtor, Cece (Julia Fox), introduces them to the house, unaware of the invisible entity that lingers within its walls.

What sets Presence apart is its storytelling perspective: much of the film unfolds from the point of view of the unseen ghostly presence itself. As the family’s secrets unravel, ranging from Rebekah’s possible white-collar crime to Chloe’s ongoing grief, the supernatural force becomes both a silent observer and, at times, a protector. Tensions escalate when Tyler’s troubled friend Ryan (West Mulholland) enters the picture, leading to a harrowing climax that blurs the lines between human and supernatural dangers.

Cast: Lucy Liu as Rebekah Payne, the complex family matriarch, Chris Sullivan as Chris Payne, the conflicted father, Callina Liang as Chloe Payne, the grieving daughter, Eddy Maday as Tyler Payne, the ambitious son, West Mulholland as Ryan Caldwell, Tyler’s troubled friend, Julia Fox as Cece, the enigmatic realtor, Natalie Woolams-Torres as Lisa, the medium.

The movie’s soundtrack was composed by Zack Ryan, known for his work on HBO Max’s Full Circle. Soderbergh’s direction called for music that could “fill out the invisible titular character with emotion to spare, yet keep it dramatically sparse,” and Ryan’s score rises to the challenge.
